The Vineyard

When we bought this beautiful house in August 2005 we vaguely knew there was a vineyard and where it was but to access it required machetes and thorn proof clothing!

Gradually over the last couple of years we have, slowly, oh so slowly, uncovered not only the vineyard but amazingly also the vines! Some of which have been buried in a thorny thicket for up to 10 years. We have had grapes from it every year since we have been here but 2008 sees us with about 2/3 of the land cleared, the posts up and the vines pruned so hopefully this year we will be able to make a little wine and see if it is worth re-instating it as a commercial vineyard with all the associated red tape!

We both see this very much as a retirement project trouble is I am far too busy with my dogs and what I do WITH the dogs and John is far too busy at work in London for either of us to consider actually retiring so the vineyard is in fact just an extra job! But one we both love and often at the weekend John can be found in there, with his pruning gear, ties and new posts, working away with Scott, Skye and sometimes a couple of other clan members 'helping'!

Click on the thumbnails below to see the images full size. The top two photos show the vineyard in April 2008, having been cleared ready for the new growing season. Below them are photos taken in August, showing the new crop of grapes ripening & swelling with the sun and (rather plentiful) rain.
